Your beneficiaries will learn about this policy if you tell them about it. The insurer will not under any circumstance contact your beneficiary or make them aware of the policy while you are still alive. It is important to let your loved ones know about your policy so that they can know to claim and avoid any delays in claim payment.
Life Cover is not limited to death as a result of sickness, but also covers you for death due to accidents or acts of violence against you. As a young person, you might not be married or have your own family to worry about. However, you may still be financially responsible for your parents, siblings, extended family, etc. Who will support them when you are no longer there? Having Life cover gives you the peace of mind that your loved ones will be taken care of. Life Cover is generally cheaper when you start young.
Funeral cover is meant to cover the immediate costs associated with a funeral. Life Cover is meant to take care of the ongoing day to day needs of your family beyond the funeral. This is why Life Cover offers much high cover amounts which can be used to buy groceries on ongoing basis, pay your children’s school fees or settle debts, like your house/car loan. Life Cover is relatively cheaper than Funeral Cover because the premiums are calculated based on your risk profile. Instead of taking out multiple funeral covers which may be more expensive, rather determine the needs of your family, i.e. how much is needed for funeral costs and ongoing expenses after your passing. Once determined, take up suitable cover to cater for your needs.
Some Life Cover providers, like Vodacom, offer a portion of your total cover as an immediate cash payout to assist with funeral expenses. If the immediate cash payout is adequate to cover your cover funeral expenses, then additional funeral cover may not be necessary. However, Life Cover only covers you. If you will be required to contribute towards your family’s funeral expenses, then you’ll need to take out Funeral Cover to cover them.
